Nicky Armstrong

About

Nicky was born in Cornwall. At the age of twelve, the family moved to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, where Nicky attended Girls Collegiate School and then Durban Technikon, studying Theatre craft. Upon returning to the UK, Nicky attended Birmingham University and completed a BA (Hons) in Theatre Design. Having won a place at the Slade School of Art, she gained an MA in fine art in 1992.

Since leaving academia, Nicky has maintained an impressive and successful artistic career over the last 25 years.  Nicky is Artist in Residence at The London Art House, both an academic institution (using art in therapy) and, due to its exquisite interiors, an award winning conference venue. Having exclusively designed all the interiors, Nicky also has over 60 commissioned works on permanent display.

Whilst Nicky has had 6 solo exhibitions in London, most of her work has been commissioned. As commissioned work is client directed Nicky has covered a broad spectrum of styles from noted Trompe L’oeil to copies of Old Masters with classic glazes and self manufactured and ground pigments. Nicky’s Trompe L’oeil work is renowned and as such, she has taught techniques in this field at Hampstead Decorative Arts and the Hampstead School of Art.

Nicky is also a successful illustrator having illustrated over 28 books. Her ‘Helping Children’ series of books have sold well over 200,000 copies to date.

Nicky decided to move back to Cornwall and settled in Rock. Nicky has re-discovered the beauty and romance of the country she grew up in as a child.

With the privilege of living in one of the worlds most stunning landscapes and, having the time to develop a relationship with the colours and shapes they inspire, Nicky has been moved to paint what she sees and feels.
